Blinds Window Coverings

In one form or another everyone uses some type of blinds or window coverings in their home or office. They are used for a variety of purposes from protecting the furnishings and carpet from the fading effects of the sun's rays to helping to keep your home cooler in the summer. Depending on the style of window treatments you choose they are also used to provide you and your family with a necessary degree of privacy. There are literally dozens of different types of blinds and window coverings available to choose from making it easy to match them to the rest of the décor in your home. Traditional choices such as curtains have been used for centuries and can be changed in the spring and fall to suit the season adding light and color for the summer months and thick warmth in the winter months.

However in some areas the more common forms of blinds and window coverings include horizontal or vertical blinds, roman shades and roll up bamboo shades. All of these work very well and in many cases choosing the best one is simply a matter of deciding which style fits in with your décor the best and suits your tastes in décor. With all of the different choices available in blinds and window coverings, it would only follow that taking good care of them and cleaning them on a regular basis is necessary not only to keep them looking their best, but to keep them operating properly for as long as possible. However the proper care and maintenance of your window coverings depends on the type that you have chosen to use in your home. Traditional curtains may be easily cleaned by simply using your family washing machine and then hanging them to dry. Some materials may require ironing to make them look nice and others, especially those made for the winter with a heavy insulating backing may have to be professionally cleaned at the dry cleaners. When it comes to blinds and window coverings made from materials such as plastic a simple, but frequent dusting is usually sufficient unless they are really dirty then a cloth and hot soapy water works well. Wooden blinds and window coverings can be a little more challenging to take care of if they get dirty.

The biggest problem with wood is that if it gets wet either being cleaned with water or a chemical the wood may absorb the liquid and become stained. If the wood is sealed well with paint or varnish you can clean them lightly with a damp rag, but if they are stained a light dusting is the only thing recommended.
