California Shutters
With all the different options available to you, choosing the right window treatment when redecorating your home can be a challenge. One of the most popular choices today is the Plantation or California shutters option. They make a significant impact on the temperature of your room as they continuously block out the sun's hot rays from coming into your home. And unlike the more common mini and venetian style blinds with narrow blades, California shutters feature a wider more effective blade that is generally made from a hardwood such as basswood. Basswood can be stained or painted to match and compliment any décor in your house. These shutters are similar to the ones used in the southern United States and Caribbean islands, where keeping the sun out of the home is an essential in the hot summer months. The reason California shutters are so popular is because they simultaniously block out the sun and allow cool breezes to pass though. No curtain will ever do that!
Traditionally, California shutters are made from local hardwoods. But today you can also find them made from man-made materials such as plastic, aluminum, MDF (medium density fiberboard ) and extra stiff cloth. These materials can work very well and unlike some of the more traditional hardwoods, will not warp and sag after years of usage and/or misuse. Most of these shutters can be painted and repainted too, but we generally recommend MDF if you like to change your colours often.
